EIE Tutorial: Creating an icon file from a collection of JPEG, PNG, or BMP images
Step 1: Opening Source Images
  • Click "File" and then choose "Open image into existing document..."
  • Select one or more image files to load into the current document
  • Note: After selecting an image and pressing "Open", you can repeat the process to load more images into the active document
  • The loaded images appear in the frames list

Step 2: (optional) Resizing Images
  • Note: If any of the loaded images have a width or height value greater than 256, it is highly recommended that they are resized. Icon and cursor files can contain images of any size, but typically have images of dimensions 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, or 128x128.
  • To resize an image, select it in the image list by clicking on it. You can hold shift and select multiple images if you want to resize multiple images at once.
  • Choose "Modifiers" from the main menu, then highlight "Resize" and choose the desired option. The "Custom" option will allow you to specify an exact width and height for the image.
  • Note: If you have multiple images selected and choose the "Custom..." option, all images will be resized to the dimensions entered. If you choose one of the percentage options, each image will be resized to that percentage of their original dimensions.

Step 3: Saving the icon or cursor file
  • Make sure you have all images adjusted to reasonable sizes
  • Click on "File" from the main menu then "Save As..."
  • From the file types pull-down menu choose "Icon and Cursor Files (*.ico;*.cur)"
  • Enter the desired file name. The default file extension will be ".ico". If no file extension is provided or the extension is set to ".ico" then the file will be saved as an icon file. If you wish to save a cursor file, append a ".cur" extension to the file name.
  • Click the "Save" button.
